The Portsmouth Free Public Library was built in 1897 and has had several additions and renovations since then.  It is one building of approximately 9,515 square feet serving the Portsmouth community. There are approximately 75,000 items in the library. Many that offer an historical reference to the ever-changing town of Portsmouth, including geographical maps, yearbooks and currently rare photos and documents of Portsmouth in the 1700’s to the present day.

The John T. Pierce, Sr. Portsmouth Historical Collection serves to engage the public with visual documents of a past that help build the stepping stones to what all communities can appreciate.
